Qinwen Zheng v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

A lot of people may not be aware of Qinwen Zheng just yet but the 18-year-old is well on the path to find the spotlight – it is just a matter of time.
Having turned pro just last year, she has since reached six ITF singles finals – and has remarkably gone the distance in all of them. Two of those six titles came in 2021, with Zheng’s last event being the Macha Lake Open in June where she beat Aleksandra Krunic in the final.
And if that’s not impressive enough, she is making her debut in the Palermo Open and has definitely kickstarted her journey on a stylish note. The Chinese player reached the main draw as a qualifier without dropping a single set and in the opener, she defeated the number two seed Ludmilla Samsonova 6-3, 6-2.
It is also worth remarking that Zheng arrived in Palermo on the back of consecutive semifinal runs in ITF Montpellier and Contrexeville.

Cristian Survives Brancaccio
Jaqueline Cristian defeated Nuria Brancaccio in the first round of the Palermo Open 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to post her best WTA results since reaching the quarterfinal in the St. Petersburg Trophy in March.
In that Russian event, the 23-year-old started as a qualifier and defeated Vera Lapko and Jelena Ostapenko to deliver her single best run in an upper-tier tournament.
Since then, Cristian has featured in a host of competitions spread across Istanbul, Madrid, Belgrade, Paris, Berlin, London, and most recently, Budapest. With the exception of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Cristian could not make it past the qualifiers in any of the preceding tournaments.

Truth to be told, this match is wide open for anyone to win. But Zheng, owing to her brilliant and more importantly, consistent form, will start as the favourite. She has the momentum on her side and certainly makes for an appealing bet.
