Pedro Martinez v Jozef Kovalik Head to Head

Martinez and Kovalik have played twice before, at the Challenger tour. Those matches were split at 1-1, with the Spaniard winning in Portoroz in 2017. Kovalik, however, won their match on the clay of Braunschweig in 2019.

Martinez Outlasts Bautista Agut In A Thriller

Pedro Martinez secured the finest win of his career by ranking, after defeating compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-7 7-5 in one of the longest three-set matches of 2021 – lasting a little over three hours.

And in the process, he reached his second ATP tour quarterfinal of his career (the first was in Rio last year). Since the tour switched to clay in April, Martinez has garnered almost every win of his 2021 season on the surface.

The 24-year-old fashioned 11 opportunities to break serve and he converted five – one of them crucially in the decider. Martinez who is nine years a junior to Bautista Agut had the fresher legs when the match entered Iron Man territory.

He won 43% of return points and stayed solid from the baseline despite his inability to win the match in straight sets.

Martinez takes his time spent on the court this week a few minutes shy of six hours considering he needed two hours and 43 minutes to outlast Lucas Pouille in the first round.

Kovalik Produces Spectacular Comeback

In his third main draw appearance in Kitzbuhel, Jozef Kovalik has outpaced his previous two showings in the Austrian city. The fact that he has done so as a qualifier makes the achievement a little more special.

The man from Bratislava is on a roll this week, winning four matches including two qualifying rounds to reach his second ATP tour quarterfinal of 2021. Kovalik defied the odds in victories over Jaume Munar and Jiri Vesely to reach this stage.

Against the left-handed Czech, he recovered from losing the first set and 15 aces that flew past him to win 2-6 6-2 6-4 in two hours. He broke serve twice in the second set, and once in the third set.

Kovalik won 70% of first-serve points and dropped just eight points in the third set as Vesely’s patience waned in the wake of the Slovak’s revival.

Martinez v Kovalik Prediction and Tip

Martinez is certainly the superior player and particularly on clay. But he could have very little left in the tank after investing a lot of energy in two matches to reach this stage. Kovalik enters his third straight match as the underdog and looks well priced to win a set here.
