Jannik Sinner v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Jannik Sinner and Steve Johnson have been involved in just one, career head-to-head meeting till date. The pair crossed swords in the round-robin stages of the 2019 Rome Masters, with Sinner coming through in three sets.

Sinner Fights Past Korda

Coming into Washington on the back of a disappointing last-16 finish at Atlanta, Sinner opened his campaign with a straight-set romp over rising Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori.

He followed up the opening-round win with a hard-fought victory over his current doubles partner Sebastian Korda. Though he eventually came through in straight sets, both went to tiebreaks that were closely contested.

With neither player managing to break each other at the end of the regulation 12 games in the opening set, a tiebreak ensued. Sinner got his nose ahead with a mini-break and held on to his lead to eventually win the tiebreak 7-3.

The second set panned out on exactly similar lines, with the American forcing a tiebreak. However, the tiebreak ended in favor of the Italian again, by the same score-line.

In Johnson, Sinner has a tough hurdle to ensure passage to the last-four. However, eyeing his second Tour title this year in the US capital, the Italian will push for glory irrespective of who he faces.

Johnson Routs Berankis to Enter Quarters

Currently ranked 81st in singles, Johnson got his Washington campaign off to a winning start after prevailing in straight sets against Ramkumar Ramanathan of India.

The American followed up his opening-round victory with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 upset of current World No. 18 Australian Alex de Minaur.

Taking a world of belief from the de Minaur upset into his pre-quarters clash against Ricardas Berankis, Johnson whipped the Lithuanian in straight sets to set up a last-eight date with Sinner.

Johnson has some momentum with him, having recorded a quarter-final finish at Los Cabos, and won’t be a pushover for the Italian in the last eight in Washington.

Sinner v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Though Sinner won their only previous head-to-head clash in Rome, the American fought hard and even took a set off the Italian. He certainly has the game to get over the line this time.
