Johanna Konta v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

Konta has dominated the rivalry, having won five and lost one on the tour. If one were to include the qualifiers, the Briton has a 6-1 head-to-head lead.

Konta Returns After Being Sidelined for Two Months

Johanna Konta is returning after missing more than two months of action. The last time she played a competitive match, the World No. 41 defeated her Monday’s opponent Zhang in the final of the Nottingham Open to lift her fourth career title and a first since 2017.

The 30-year-old however had to withdraw from Wimbledon after one of the members of her team tested positive for coronavirus and subsequently pulled out of Tokyo after testing positive for the virus herself.

A three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Konta had a disappointing 3-7 start to the season, before finally hitting form in Nottingham and improving her 2021 win-loss record to 8-7.

But just when she found her rhythm, she was forced out for more than two months. It will be a fifth appearance for her in Montreal, having previously reached the quarterfinal in 2016 and the Round of 16 in 2018. She was knocked out in the first round in 2019.

Zhang In Decent Touch

She had a terrible start to the season, winning just one of her first 10 matches of the year. Then came the Nottingham Open and things began to change for Zhang.

The 32-year-old Chinese won four matches in a row to reach the final in Nottingham to give her season some impetus.

Two weeks ago, Zhang reached the semifinals in Pallermo, while this week, she made it to the last eight in San Jose with wins over Emma Raducanu and Madison Keys before bowing out to Ana Konjuh in three.

So overall, the World no. 51 heads to Montreal in decent touch and will be hoping to at least match her last two performances at the Rogers Cup. Having never won a main draw match in three previous appearances, Zhang won her first round matches at the Rogers Cup in 2018 and 2019, but couldn’t go past the Round of 64.

Konta v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Given Konta’s dominance over Zhang, she will be the favourite, but the Briton hasn’t played for a while and Zhang has got into a good rhythm over the last two tournaments. So expect a close three-setter, with Konta edging past Zhang.
