Alison Riske v Leylah Annie Fernandez Head to Head

Riske and Fernandez have never been involved in any head-to-head meeting before. They will, hence, rely on old clips and footage of each other’s matches to firm up their game plans for their very first clash.

Riske Ousted by Cirstea at Canadian Open

Coming into the Canadian Open on the back of a last-16 finish at the Silicon Valley Classic, Riske drew experienced Romanian Sorana Cirstea in her opening match in Montreal.

However, unlike what was expected of the seasoned American campaigner, she couldn’t rise to the challenge and went down in straight sets to the Romanian to crash out of the tournament.

Riske fell behind in the early exchanges as her opponent hit the ground running and pushed for a break. The Romanian’s persistence paid off as she got herself a break of serve and held on to her advantage to clinch the opening set by a comfortable margin.

The second set panned out on similar lines as Cirstea, wary not to take her foot off the pedal, carried on in the aggressive vein as she did in the first and was duly rewarded as she opened up a decisive lead over her opponent and eventually coasted home 6-3, 6-4.

At Cincinnati, she does have an opportunity to salvage a faltering season that hasn’t fetched wholesome returns. But standing between her and a shot at redemption is Leylah Annie Fernandez, her Canadian opponent in the opening round.

Though a qualifier, the Canadian will go into the clash with zero expectations and pressure, which often enables an athlete to be at her best.

Fernandez lost to Dart Last Week

Currently ranked 70th in singles and still finding her feet in the women’s circuit, Fernandez had a chance to shine and announce herself to the tennis world at the Canadian Open.

Though she couldn’t cross the finish line in her tournament opener against Harriet Dart of Great Britain, she did well to stay in the hunt and even raise visions of victory.

After losing the opening set 7-5, she fought valiantly to take the second to a tiebreak. However, her opponent pipped her in the tiebreak to close out a narrow, straight set win.

However, taking the positives from her defeat in Montreal, Fernandez cleared the qualifiers to book her passage to the main draw at the Cincinnati Masters.

The 18-year-old faces a tough opener against Riske, a vastly experienced competitor and a veteran of many battles who won’t be easy to dislodge.

Riske v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

On experience, Riske starts as a clear favorite in this opening-round encounter. However, the Canadian won’t be overcome by the fear of losing and would take the momentum from her qualifying wins into this match.
