Medvedev Begins Campaign in Style

2019 Cincinnati champion began his 2021 campaign in style, defeating American Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets.

The top seed, who captured his fourth Masters 1000 crown in Toronto last week, won 96% (26 of 27) first serve points to clinch the second-round contest 6-2, 6-2 in just under an hour.

Broken once in the match, Medvedev converted five of six break points and served up 10 aces to improve to 38-9 in 2021 and sail into the next round.

The World No. 2, who also clinched titles in Marseille and Mallorca this year, and finished runner-up at the Australian Open, won his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati two years ago, by beating David Goffin in the final. Last year, though he could only reach the quarterfinals of the tournament, falling to Roberto Bautista Agut.

Resurgent Dimitrov Downs Bublik

He had come into the tournament in woeful form, having won just two of his last nine matches. But with two wins from two matches in Cincy, it seems Dimitrov is back in his elements.

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian defeated Alexander Bublik in straight sets to move into the third round. Converting three of nine break points and winning 84% first serve points, the World No. 21 beat the Kazakh 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 24 minutes.

The win improved the former World No. 3 to 13-12 this season. He had begun well by reaching quarterfinals of the first three events that he featured in, which included the Australian Open, but injuries and loss of form took the momentum away from his season.

A winner in Cincinnati in 2017, Dimitrov began this year’s campaign by knocking out 13th seed Bautista Agut in the first round on Tuesday. Serving 16 aces, he beat the Spaniard 6-3, 6-4.

Medvedev v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Medvedev will be wary of a resurgent Dimitrov, but the World No. 2 is in such great form that he should come out unscathed.
