Anett Kontaveit v Lauren Davis Head to Head

Kontaveit Coming off Opening Loss in Cincinnati

Coming into the Cincinnati Masters on the back of an opening-round loss to American Jessica Pegula at the Canadian Open, Kontaveit drew in-form Tunisian Ons Jabeur in her tournament opener.

A fierce competitor who never takes a backward step irrespective of who she is playing, the Estonian, currently ranked 28th in singles, fought back valiantly after losing the opening set in a breeze.

Licking the wounds from the opening set which she lost 2-6, Kontaveit blazed to a 6-4 win in the second, taking the match to a deciding set.

However, the Tunisian came roaring back into in the contest in the third and eventually edged the Estonian 7-5 to close out a win.

At Cleveland, Kontaveit has a chance to regain the form that took her to the third round at the Roland-Garros this year. Though she faces a relatively lightweight opponent in Lauren Davis in her opening match, the Estonian will know better than to take the American lightly.

Though she won their only previous head-to-head clash before the Cleveland tie, Kontaveit ought to be wary of complacency creeping into her bones.

Davis Failed to Qualify for Cincinnati Open

Currently ranked 97th in singles, Davis cleared the first qualifying hurdle for the main draw at the Cincinnati Masters, beating compatriot Kristie Ahn in three sets.

However, the 27-year-old American fell to a comprehensive 0-6, 4-6 defeat to Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan in the second qualifier, thereby missing out on a chance to make the main draw.

Though the recent run of results hasn’t gone her way, Davis can some bit of confidence from her semifinal finish at the LTP Charleston Pro Tennis event as she bids to open her Cleveland campaign with a win.

However, she faces a tough tournament opener against superior-ranked and more accomplished Anett Kontaveit, who beat her comprehensively in their only previous meeting.
