Ilya Ivashka upset the top seed and 2016 champion Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarterfinal on Thursday to march into a second semifinal this year.

The 63rd-ranked Belarusian improved his season record to 21-12 following the 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win over the Spaniard. The 27-year-old Belarusian didn’t face a single break point on his serve, while he converted two of four break points. Ivashka, who came through the qualifiers to reach the semifinals in Munich, had beaten Alexander Zverev in the last eight but fell to Jan-Lennard Struff. On Friday, Ivashka will be aiming to reach a first career final.

He had begun his Wnston-Salem challenge with a straight sets win over Andreas Seppi, before rallying from a set down to beat the sixth seed Marin Cilic in the Round of 32. In the quarterfinals, Ivashka got his Munich revenge, defeating Struff in straight sets.

Ruusuvuori Into a Second Semifinal of the Season

Ruusuvuori, too, has never featured in a tour final. The world No. 76 was a semifinalist at the Atlanta Open recently but his run was stalled by Brandon Nakashima.

On Friday he will be playing in a second tour-level semifinal of the season after he knocked out 14th seed Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinal on Thursday. Ruusuvuori won a nail-biting first set tiebreak and then raced away with the match in no time beating the Frenchman 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in an hour and 35 minutes.

The 22-year-old Finn, who came in with a 14-15 record, has improved to 18-15 with four wins in the tournament. He started with an easy victory over Dennis Kudla before eliminating three seeded players on the trot, starting with fifth seed Alexander Bublik in the Round of 32, followed by wins over 12th seed Benoit Paire and Gasquet.

Ivashka v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip
