Medvedev Continues Strong Run On Hard Courts

World number two Daniil Medvedev began his quest for a maiden grand slam in New York as one of the favorites after Novak Djokovic and also one of the potential individuals who could come in the way of a calendar slam for the world number one from Serbia.

It has been a good year for Medvedev but he will be disappointed with some of his results, most importantly his showing in the Aussie Open final at Melbourne against Djokovic.

With a mix of good form across surfaces, especially hard courts, indoors and even on grass, the Russian was a finalist here in 2019 losing an epic five setter to Rafa Nadal and a semi-finalist last year against eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

The Russian began his campaign against French veteran Richard Gasquet who matched him well for a set and a half after which Medvedev ran away for a straight set win with ease.

Up against young German Dominik Koepfer in the next round, it was much the same for the world number two with a tight first set which saw breaks of serve on each side before Medvedev clinched it 6-4. The next two sets saw him only drop two games setting himself up for the third round and looking good for a deep run here this fortnight.

Andujar Outdoing Himself on Hard Courts

Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar is known for his abilities on clay and lived up to it with wins over Roger Federer in Geneva and upsetting Dominic Thiem in the opening round of the French Open.

It was not much for a grass season for the Spaniard losing in the opening round at Mallorca and pulling out of Wimbledon after an epic first round win against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Andujar came to the US Open without participating in any of the build-ups from the US Open series. He did well to come back from two sets to love to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin in the opener and then put up a clinical performance against German Phil Kohlschreiber for a comfortable straight sets win in the second round.

The Spaniard will be aware that the task gets uphill now but will come out with nothing to lose and look to challenge the number two seed Daniil Medvedev in the next round.

Medvedev v Andujar Prediction and Tip

Unfortunately, on the hard courts of New York, this does make for a one sided battle. Medvedev is in prime form and looks ready for a deep run where as veteran Andujar is better suited for the clay and has already done better than expected here.

A straight set win for Medvedev seems the most likely option.

Tip: Medvedev to win in three sets: 2/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
