Botic van de Zandschulp v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

Zandschulp and Bagnis have never played each other till date. However, if their wins in the previous two rounds are any indication, their first-ever head-to-head clash is likely to be an absorbing affair.

Van de Zandschulp Overcomes in-form Ruud

Coming into the year’s last Grand Slam on the back of a semifinal finish in his last Challenger event, the unheralded Zandschulp wasn’t expected to rattle too many gilded cages in the tournament.

However, defying most estimates, the 25-year-old Dutchman, currently ranked 117th in singles, not only came out of the qualifying rounds with flying colors but also outlasted Carlos Taberner of Spain in an epic five-setter in the first round.

Fighting back from two sets down against the Spaniard, Zandschulp mounted a brilliant fightback to prevail in five sets. The eventual score-line read 2-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the Dutchman’s favor.

Few would have given him a ghost of a chance against in-form Norwegian Casper Ruud in the second round. With four Tour title already to his name this year, Ruud was expected to make light work of Zandschulp and make further strides in his quest for a maiden Grand Slam championship trophy.

However, in a shocking turn of events, the Dutchman recovered from a loss in the first set to blitz the next three and cap off a victory to remember. The win also saw him pick up one of the biggest scalps of his career.

Having fought past two tough opponents in his previous two rounds, the tall Dutchman will fancy his third straight win against Argentine Facundo Bagnis in his next.

Bagnis Sees off Trungelliti

Fresh from a crushing opening-round loss to Marcos Giron of the US in his last tournament – the Winston-Salem Open – Bagnis drew Taro Daniel of Japan in the first round at the Flushing Meadows.

Currently hogging the 80th position in singles rankings, the Argentine produced near-flawless tennis to trounce his Japanese opponent in straight sets.

The victory saw him set up a second-round battle with fellow countryman Marco Trungelliti. Recovering from a mid-match slump that saw him go down in the second set after winning the first in a tiebreak, the 31-year-old managed to quell the challenge from his compatriot, prevailing eventually in four sets.

However, he faces a tough road into the pre-quarters as his Dutchman opponent Zandshulp is flying high on a sizzling run of form and won’t make it easy for him to reach the fourth round.

Zandschulp v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

While placed higher in the rankings currently, Bagnis does have a fight on his hands against Zandschulp in this third-round encounter. However, having played more high-profile events against top stars leading up to the US Open, the Argentine, one suspects, will be slightly more battle-hardened going into this clash.
