Diego Schwartzman v Alex Molcan Head to Head
Schwartzman and Molcan have never been involved in a head-to-head meeting before. While posting contrasting second-round wins, the Argentine and the Slovakian will be up for a fierce battle in their first-ever match against each other.
Schwartzman Swats Past Anderson
Coming into the year’s last Grand Slam on the back of a decent run of results – back-to-back last-16 finishes at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters – Schwartzman drew Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in the first round.
The current World No. 14 made light work of the Lithuanian, beating him 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting with former World No.5 Kevin Anderson.
Against the veteran South African star, Schwartzman faced some measure of resistance in the opening set which went to a tiebreak. However, the Argentine held his nerves in the tiebreak to take the first set 7-6 (7-4).
Thereafter, the Argentine was literally unstoppable as the 29-year-old rode roughshod over the ageing South African to come out trumps in straight sets.
The win saw Schwartzman setting up a third-round battle with unheralded Slovakian Alex Molcan. Though a relative lightweight in terms of age and experience, the Slovakian reaped the rewards of some inspired tennis in the tournament thus far and won’t be easy meat for the Argentine.
Molcan Downs Nakashima
Not an accomplished yet on the men’s circuit, Molcan finished in the round-of-16 at the German Open and followed it up with a title-run in his next — a Challenger event.
Coming into the US Open unbeaten, the 23-year-old Slovakian cleared the qualifying hurdles with relative ease before being drawn to face Cem Ilkel of Turkey in the first round.
After dropping the opening set against his Turkish opponent, Molcan drew himself level by winning the second set. The Slovakian dominated the Turk thereafter, prevailing in four sets.
Taking on in-form Brandon Nakashima in his next, Molcan played arguably his best match this season to take down the American in five sets.
After losing the opening set, the American won two sets on the bounce, threatening to run away with the match. However, Molcan dug deep and showed exemplary resolve to fight to turn the contest on its head. The Slovak eventually prevailed in five sets.
Though he faces a much tougher opponent in Schwartzman, the Slovakian would bring the same fearless approach against the Argentine which has brought him great dividends in the tournament so far.
Schwartzman v Molcan Prediction and Tip
In terms of ranking and experience, Molcan is simply no match for Schwartzman. However, on current form, the Slovakian is an underdog that no top star would take lightly. But Schwartzman would still be starting as a favorite.
