Elise Mertens v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.

Mertens Fumbles into Round Three

Number 15 seed Elise Mertens continued her journey in the US Open 2021 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Valentini Grammatikopoulou of Greece in round two. The match lasted for an hour and 22 minutes and saw the Belgian hit 13 winners. It wasn’t the best of the performances by Mertens, seeing that her first service win rate was just 62 per cent. In many ways, the Greek was undone by her high count of unforced errors (38 to Mertens’ 19) and a poor first service game.

But a win is a win and Mertens will now look to overcome her toughest adversary yet in the Flushing Meadows, at least on paper. In her opening round against Rebecca Peterson, the World No. 16 had to battle the Swede for three and a half hours that entailed two tie-breaks.

Even though Mertens won that match 2-1, it was not before she staged a comeback from a set down and saved six match points to stay alive.

However, when we look at her recent form, these results do not seem that surprising. With a bunch of early-round exits in Montreal and Cincinnati, she hasn’t been in the best of the form of late.

Mertens was quite good at the start of the year when she won the Gippsland Trophy and later reached the final in the Istanbul Cup. As a doubles player, she won the Australian Open and Wimbledon with Aryna Sabalenka and Hsieh Su-Wei respectively. In the singles discipline, however, there is much to be done.

Jabeur Looking to Build on her Stellar Season

Ons Jabeur of Tunisia has had a splendid year so far, as evident from her current singles ranking as World No. 21 and a win-loss tally of 40-15 as of her round two win in the US Open.

Yet to drop a set in New York, she most recently routed María Camila Osorio Serrano 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour. Jabuer hit 16 winners and looked in control for most of the match.

The 27-year-old arrived at the Flushing Meadows following an eventful spell over the last couple of months. Following a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, she reached the same stage in WTA Montreal and later, third-round in the Cincinnati Masters. In these tournaments, Jabeur delivered some impressive wins over the likes of Iga Swiatek, Bianca Andreescu, Daria Kasatkina, Garbine Muguruza, and Venus Williams.

The WTA Charleston finalist also won her maiden singles title in Birmingham, upsetting Kasatkina in the final. Needless to say, Jabeur is sailing high on confidence and is in good spirits to deliver a deep run in the final major of the year.

Mertens v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

As a two-time consecutive quarterfinalist here, Mertens may have a bit of history on her side. But considering her recent shaky form and Jabeur’s absolute brilliance and consistency, it is going to be hard for her to emulate the run from the past.

Jabeur will start as the favourite for us here and should do well to reach the fourth round.
