Kerber Rallies Past Stephens

She had never beaten Sloane Stephens in their past five meetings, but the German was determined not to lose this time, fighting back from a set down to oust the American in the third round of the U.S. Open.

The 2016 champion had gone a break down early in the first set; however, she got it back later only to be broken again by the 2017 champion, who took the first set 5-7.

Kerber wasn’t broken again in the rest of the match as she dominated the proceeding s with two breaks of serve in the second and two breaks in the third to wrap up the one-hour-and-58-minute contest 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

This was the second three-setter that the German had to deal with this week. She also rallied from a set down to beat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round. The World No. 17 had a relatively easy second round win as she made a quick work of another Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina.

The 33-year-old has been in terrific form over the last three tournaments. She won her 13th career title, and her her first since 2018, at Hamburg in June, followed it up with a run to the semifinals at Wimbledon and then made another final four appearance in Cincinnati. Interestingly it was Ashleigh Barty who beat her in both the semifinals before going on to win the titles.

Fernandez Stuns the Defending Champion

Eighteen-year-old Leylah Fernandez pulled off a stunning upset on Friday, defeating the two-time U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka and moving into the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in just her seventh major.

Osaka was the only one to break in the first set and was the first to break in the second to serve for the match at 5-6. But the gutsy left-hander refused to surrender and having not got a break point in the entire match until that game, she dominated Osaka’s serve to send the match into the tiebreak.

Fortunes turned from that point on and Fernandez outplayed the third seed in the tiebreak to force the decider.

The World no. 73 began the third set with a break of serve and, cheered on by a vociferous crowd, protected the advantage through the end of the match to complete the come-from-behind 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory.

The match was packed with emotions as Fernandez rejoiced every little success with loud cheers and fist pumps, while an anguished Osaka showed her frustration by smashing her racquet a couple of times.

Having dumped the World no. 3 out, now the feisty Fernandez sets sight on a first major quarterfinal. The Canadian, who defeated Ana Konjuh and Kaia Kanepi without much trouble in the first two rounds, will have her task cut out against the three-time major champion. It will be interesting to see of she can maintain the same level of intensity in the fourth round.

Kerber v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Kerber’s experience and current form make her the favourite in this contest, but she will be wary of Fernandez’s aggressive approach and fighting spirit. Expect three sets in the contest with Kerber heading into the last eight.
