Aryna Sabalenka v Elise Mertens Head to Head

Sabalenka leads Mertens 5-2 and has beaten her adversary in their last four meetings on the WTA Tour.

They met as recently as the Madrid Open quarterfinal this season where the Belarusian prevailed 6-1, 4-0 before Mertens retired from that match.

The pair has also played doubles together and won the Australian Open and US Open Women’s Doubles titles in 2021 and 2019 respectively.

Sabalenka on a Roll

Aryna Sabalenka continues her imperious march to her maiden singles Grand Slam trophy. She hasn’t dropped a set in her last two games and so far, has seamlessly dispatched the likes of Nina Stojanovic, Tamara Zidansek, and Danielle Collins in New York.

That match against Collins lasted for an hour and 30 minutes and saw the World No. 2 play some quality tennis to keep Collins in check. She ultimately won the match 6-3, 6-3.

Sabalenka’s last major was the Wimbledon Championships where she reached the semifinal. By the looks of it, she is well on track to emulate a similar run at the Flushing Meadows. Her exploits in the North American swing include a semifinal appearance in the Canadian Open and a round two exit in Cincinnati.

On the whole, the season she has had has been more than phenomenal to propel her into the top three in the WTA singles rankings. She won the titles in Abu Dhabi and Madrid and was the finalist in the Stuttgart Open. Sabalenka was also a quarterfinalist in the Miami Open and WTA Dubai.

Mertens Survives Jabeur

World No. 16 Elise Mertens may not have had that brilliant of a season when compared to her former doubles partner, but that hasn’t stopped her from having a good run in the US Open.

After surviving that major scare against Rebecca Peterson in the first round, the 25-year-old overcame Valentini Grammatikopoulou to set the third-round clash with Ons Jabeur. On paper, it looked like the Tunisian would get the better Mertens but it turned out to be the other way around. Mertens took the match 6-3, 7-5, in 89 minutes on the back of 13 winners and Jabeur’s 32 unnecessary errors.

A semifinalist in this year’s WTA San Jose, Mertens has had a decent season in 2021, at least in the first half. She won the Gippsland Trophy and built on that success with a semifinal run in Dubai and later, a runner-up feat in Istanbul. Mertens also won the Istanbul Cup and Wimbledon doubles titles.

In the recent few weeks, her form was rather muted – led by the early-round exits in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Sabalenka v Mertens Prediction and Tip

Having spent a great deal of time together on the doubles circuit, the two players are well-versed with each other’s games.

That said, Sabalenka will start as the favourite as she has a much better chance of making it to the quarterfinals. Her form has been significantly better than Mertens this season and she hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down either.
