Alexander Zverev v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between both players with the head-to-head tied at 1-1. While Zverev won in the semi-finals of his home tournament in Cologne last year, Sinner pulled off a fourth round upset against the German on the big stage at the French Open and Zverev will be hoping to avenge that this time around.

Zverev Continues Hard Court Streak

2020 US Open runner-up Alexander arrived in New York on an eleven match winning streak on the hard courts and hoped to carry it all the way to the second weekend here at the US Open.

Zverev continued the run in his opening two rounds against Sam Querrey and Albert Ramos-Vinalos looking in vintage form and truly living up to the label of one of the pre-tourament favorites after Novak Djokovic.

In his third round encounter, the German was up against Jack Sock at Arthur Ashe stadium with the crowd hoping to push the American through like they have done a few times this fortnight.

Sock got off to a strong start serving well and placing the ball well breaking the number four seed early to go up a break and clinch the first set 6-3. Zverev started the second set serving strong as the American had a few issues with his hamstring and needed a medical timeout early in the set, and played with his thigh wrapped thereafter.

Sock was struggling with his movement as Zverev broke twice in the set to close 6-2 and equalize the match.

The former top ten player egged on by the crowd seemed to be moving better in the third and the set and match looked pretty evenly balanced at 3-3 in the third. Zverev upped the return game thereafter breaking Sock who took a few slides as the third set ended 6-3 in favor of the German.

Another early break in the fourth for Zverev and Sock losing balance saw some more discomfort for the American, who pulled out down 1-2 and Zverev progressing to the second week looking as the biggest threat to Novak Djokovic, along with world number two Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner Comes Through Monfils Epic

Jannik Sinner has shown a lot of promise on the tour over the last two seasons and impressed all breaking into the top 20 in the world in the ATP rankings.

While the year has been a good one for Sinner , he has fallen short on some of the big occasions which has been disappointing and also depictive of the fact that the 20-year-old needs to grown mentally with experience.

It was not the easiest of opening rounds for the number 13 seed as he was pushed to four sets by Max Purcell of Australia and Zachary Svajda of the US, but prevailed eventually.

In a blockbuster third round against crowd favorite Gael Monfils of France, it was a tight first set but Sinner prevailed 7-1 in the tiebreak looking strong as he won the next set 6-2.

It was an evenly matched third set where Monfils fought back after a break down to equalize and then take the set 6-4. However, it seemed like the writing was on the wall with Sinner up 4-0 with two breaks in the fourth looking clinical heading for a win. But, the Frenchman fought back breaking three times in a row to win six consecutive games and take it to the decider winning the fourth 6-4.

Sinner broke early in the second as Monfils was evidently exhausted and struggling physically a little. Buoyed on by the crowd, Monfils managed to hold on and push the Sinner serve but eventually the Italian emerged to close the match 6-4 in the fifth and book a spot against Zverev on Labor Day Monday.

Zverev v Sinner Prediction and Tip

This makes for an exciting round of 16 battle between two future stars of the game. While Sinner has been on a good run in the last season and a half, Zverev has looked clinical this hard court season and starts as the strong favorite.

Expect a tight match with Zverev to prevail in four sets.
