Anna-Lena Friedsam v Arianna Hartono Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27-year old German, and her Dutch opponent, who is two years younger.
Friedsam Earns Wildcard Entry
Friedsam has been granted a wildcard in order to take her place in the main draw.
Unlike her opponent, she has lots of experience on the WTA tour, having been ranked as high as 45 in the world five years ago. She has also featured in two finals, losing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Linz in 2018, and Sofia Kenin in Lyon last March, just before lockdown.
That same year she was beaten in the final of the doubles of the Italian Open, where she was partnered by the Romanian Raluca Olaru.
Her recent results though have been disappointing, started with the French Open where she was beaten in the third round of qualifying. She also failed to qualify for Wimbledon and the US Open, although, sandwiched between that she travelled to the Olympics to play for Germany.
Friedsam did win her first match beating Heather Watson of Great Britain, but her run in Tokyo was ended by Pavlyuchenkova again.
Hartono Qualifies for First WTA Tournament This Year
This is the first time in 2021 that the 25-year old Dutchwoman has qualified for a senior WTA tournament, She is usually to be found on the ITF tour, where she has won two titles, the most recent of which was in Jakarta in 2019.
However, she has enjoyed more recent success in doubles events, and has featured in three finals this year, finishing runner-up in Grenoble and in Saint-Bartholome de Tirijana in Spain, but winning in Porto with partner Yuriko Lily Miyazaki.
Prior to this week, her best result of the year in singles had come in Porto, where she got to the semi-finals, a feat she repeated on home soil in the Hague.
She, however, reached the main draw in Luxembourg by beating two German opponents, first overcoming Tamara Korpatsch and then Tayisiya Morderger.
Now she gets to play another German.
Friedsam v Hartono Prediction and Tip
Although Friedsam has not been in good form recently, she is still tipped to win against the Dutch woman who has very little experience of the senior WTA tour.
