Putintseva Ends Bronzetti’s Run

World No. 44 Yulia Putintseva overcame a terrible start before going on to eliminate Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Down two breaks, Putintseva found herself 0-3 down in the first set, before turning the tables on the World No. 167 with a mix of power and clever play. The Kazakh showed lots of emotions as she forged her way back into the contest, winning six games on the trot and taking the first set.

Having got into a good rhythm, she upped her game in the next set, racing to a 5-1 lead before closing out the one-hour-and-23-minute match 6-3, 6-2.

This will be the second time that the Kazakh will be playing in a semifinal this year. The last time she reached this stage she went all the way to claim the title in Budapest.

The second seed, who defeated Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, had knocked out Britain’s Katie Boulter 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 16.

Friday’s win improved the 26-year-old to 25-20 this season.

Paolini Powers Past Cirstea

World No. 87 Jasmine Paolini sent fourth seed Sorana Cirstea packing with another power-packed performance.

The Italian converted five of nine break points and saved 10 of 13 in a delightful two-hour-and-six-minute quarterfinal contest, which ended with Paolini winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. With the win, Paolini reached a first-ever WTA semifinal of her career.

The 25-year-old featured in two WTA 125 finals on clay this year, winning the title in Bol, Croatia and finishing runner-up in Saint Malo, France.

Now making an impact on the hard surface, Paolini began the tournament with a win over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska. The Italian was leading 7-6 (7-5), 4-1 when the Ukrainian was forced to retire. In the Round of 16, Paolini knocked out Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-2.

Against Cirstea, Paolini won 64% first serve points and won a total of 99 of 179 points in the match.

Having reached a first semifinal, can she now reach a maiden final?
