The 22-year-old had a great time on clay courts this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open and the Monte Carlo Masters for his last eight debuts in Grand Slam and ATP 1000 tournaments, but has struggled on the hard surfaces recently.
The Spaniard is on a four-match losing streak, having not won since beating John Millman in the second round of the Olympics. Since then, he lost to Novak Djokovic in the third round in Tokyo and made first round exits from the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open.
Overall, Davidovich Fokina has a 22-17 record this year, but he is 7-8 on hard courts. Earlier in the season, he was a quarterfinalist in Montpellier and had won his first round matches in Rotterdam, Marseille and Dubai all hard court events.
While clay has been the most productive surface for him so far, he has produced decent results on hard courts and a run to the fourth round on his U.S. Open debut is a testament to that.

Simon Struggling for Form
Three-time Metz champion, Simon has just not got going this season. The 36-year-old Frenchman brings a 3-15 season record to the Moselle Open and will be desperate to get a few wins under his belt.
A semifinalist in Marseille last year, Simon has not just struggled on the tour but has also found the going tough at the Challenger level. His only wins on the tour this year came against Elias Ymer in Melbourne-2, Stefano Travaglia in Cagliari and Arthur Rinderknech in Winston-Salem.
Simon, who had to withdraw from the U.S. Open after his coach returned a positive test for COVID-19, is 2-5 on hard surfaces this year.
A 14-time champion on the tour from 22 finals, Simon won the Moselle Open crown. in 2010,2013 and most recently in 2018. He was also a finalist in 2015, but fell to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Overall, Simon is 21-8 in the tournament and could only reach as far as the second round in the last edition in 2019.

Although Simon has struggled the entire season, Metz tends to bring the best out of him and he will be looking to get back to form in what has been a favourite hunting tournament for him. Davidovich Fokina is looking to regain form as well. He is the higher ranked payer and will be the favourite to advance. Expect a three-setter with the Spaniard progressing.
