She had a woeful 4-11 season record before the start of the WTA 250 tournament in Portoroz, Slovenia last week. However, fortunes changed for the better last week, as she notched four consecutive victories on her way to a 10th career final, and a first since she finished runner-up in Wuhan in 2019.
She couldn’t win a third career title, going down to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the title clash, but the result was a huge confidence booster for the American, who soared six places in the rankings to No. 32. And she has carried the Slovenian form to Ostrava, where she began her challenge with a tough three-set win over France’s Fiona Ferro in the first round on Wednesday.
Down 2-4 in the first set, Riske won four games in a row to close out the set, but was completely outplayed in the second, with Ferro breaking her twice and allowing her to win just one game in the set.
The next set began with three consecutive breaks of serve with the Frenchwoman seizing the advantage, however, Riske showed mental toughness in breaking her opponent in the sixth game and then broke her again in the 10th to win the two-hour-and-15-minute contest 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
She will now be hoping to reach a second consecutive quarterfinal but faces a tricky opponent in the Swiss.

Teichmann Stuns Kerber
In what has been one of the biggest years of her professional career, Jil Teichman has clearly shown a liking for hard courts and a 17-9 record on the surface is a testament to that.
The Swiss left-hander reached the final in Cincinnati by defeating Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova, before falling to Ash Barty in the title clash. She was also a semifinalist in Dubai and Adelaide and a quarterfinalist at the Philip Island Trophy.
Having come to Ostrava in decent form, the World No. 42 continued to build on the great season with a straight sets win over the sixth seed Angelique Kerber. Teichman converted 6 of 11 break points and saved 6 of 9 in winning the battle of lefties 6-2, 6-3 in just 72 minutes.
The win improved Tehman’s overall season record to 20-15 and she now has eyes on a fifth quarterfinal this season.
Riske v Teichmann Prediction and Tip
While Riske struck form last week, she will be facing a top 50 player for the first time since the start of the Slovenian Open. What’s more, Teichman has taken out some top names recently and will be looking to keep the momentum going. Expect the Swiss to ease into the quarterfinal.
