Medvedev In Top Hard Court Form

Daniil Medvedev of Russia makes his Laver Cup debut in top form as the 2021 US Open champion.

The world number two has had a strong season already having also led Russia to an ATP Cup win, being runner-up at the Aussie Open, and winning titles at Marseille, Mallorca and Toronto in addition.

With his strong serve and clinical return, Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the US Open final a fortnight ago to stop the world number one in his bid to become the first man since Rod Laver to win the Calendar Slam and kept the Serb tied with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles.

Making his Laver Cup debt, the surface will be well suited to the Russian and he will be looking to add two valuable points on the board for Team Europe.

Shapovalov Inspired By Doubles Win

Canadian Denis Shapovalov makes his 2021 Laver Cup singles debut at the back of a promising and impressive crucial doubles win alongside John Isner for Team World.

It has been another good year for Shapovalov with some positive results including the finals at Geneva and semi-finals in Dubai, Halle and more importantly Wimbledon among others.

However, his hard court form has been sub-par with early losses in Toronto, Cincinnati and at the US Open and he will be eager to get form and confidence back ahead of Indian Wells and the rest of the season.

The Canadian was shaky at times last night erring on serve, but looked to be getting into his groove by the latter stages of the match and will be hoping to carry that form into  this crucial night session singles match for Team World.

Medvedev v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Given the form he is in, Medvedev starts as a strong favorite, but given the occasion and the arena, Shapovalov will be buoyed on by Team World support and the big doubles win last night.

Expect a close contest with the ice cool Medvedev prevailing in another ‘Laver Breaker’.
