Marketa Vondrousova’s opening match in WTA 500 Chicago couldn’t have gone any better. Facing Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, the left-handed Czech made easy work of her adversary as she stormed into the second round with 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour.
Vondrousova won 79% of her first service points in that match – a performance in line with her last stint in the Luxembourg Open. In that European tournament, the 22-year-old made it as far as the semis, dispatching the number two seed Elise Mertens in the quarters. However, she fell to Clara Tauson in the penultimate round in three sets.
Overall, Vondrousova has enjoyed a pretty decent year in 2021. A silver medal in Tokyo Olympics, a couple of fourth-round appearances in the Australian Open, Miami Open, and French Open, a semifinal run in the Yarra Valley Classic in January.
Although she has dropped out of the top 20 to the No. 41 spot, the youngster still remains a formidable opponent to face on the circuit.

Pavlyuchenkova, Looking to Scale New Heights
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is ranked World No. 13 at the moment – her career-best singles ranking which she achieved back in 2011. A decade later, she finds herself at the same spot once again – this time, with a chance to go further and break into the top 10.
However, going by the recent form, it may be a tall order to deliver for the reigning French Open runner-up. Since that trailblazing journey in Paris, Pavlyuchenkova has struggled to reach the penultimate rounds on the WTA Tour. Her best run came in the US Open where she reached the fourth round before succumbing to Karolina Pliskova.
Additionally, she was a Gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics (mixed doubles) and also reached the quarterfinal in singles.
Her last event was in Ostrava where she fell in the second round to Tereza Martincova. Consistency hasn’t been the strong suit for the 30-year-old of late, but she still has a superior pedigree and experience when compared to her Czech adversary.

This is a game that can very well go either way, purely on account of Pavlyuchenkova’s shaky results. Vondrousova is in fine form and will make life difficult for the Russian.
