Kudermetova Battles Past Kalinskaya

It took two hours and 27 minutes for the 12th seed Russian to finally see off compatriot Anna Kalinskaya in the first round of the tournament.

Kudermetova, who won her maiden WTA title in Charleston this year and also finished runner-up at the Abu Dhabi Open, found herself 2-5 down in the first set after being broken twice by Kalinskaya. But the world No. 31 fought back, winning four consecutive games and forcing the tie-break, which she eventually won by converting her third set point.

Both held serves for the first nine games of the second set, but it was Kalinskaya who got the vital break in the 10th and sent the match to a deciding set.

Kudermetova began the final set well, winning the first four games and then held on to the lead for a 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 6-2 victory.

The win ended Kudermetova’s three-match losing streak which began with a second round defeat to Petra Kvitova in Cincinnati and continued with first-round exits at the U.S. Open and the Ostrava Open. She displayed great form in the earlier half of the season, but has been in miserable touch since the start of the grass season, coming to Chicago with a 3-8 record from last 11 matches.

Dart Overcomes Haddad Maia

Britain’s Harriet Dart notched her fourth main draw win on the tour this season as she knocked out Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old, who made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, needed two hours and nine minutes to dispatch the 116th ranked Brazilian, who has been in sensational form at the ITF level this year.

Ranked 141st in the world, Dart capitalised on seven of nine chances to break Haddad Maia’s serve in the first round match and also saved half of the six break points that she faced to win the contest 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Dart had beaten American Quinn Gleason 7-5, 6-2 in the first qualifying round, but fell to Japan’s Mai Hontama 7-5, 7-6 in the second qualifying round.

Tuesday’s win meant Dart is now 23-20 from all levels this season. A solid hard-court player who has won three of her four ITF titles on the surface, Dart will be aiming to win two consecutive matches on the tour for the first time this season.

Kudermetova v Dart Prediction and Tip
