No Loss in Momentum for Kontaveit

On Sunday, Anett Kontaveit won her third singles title of 2021 in Ostrava – some 7,500 kilometres away in a different part of the world. Two days later, she was in Chicago commencing her campaign in the tournament as if nothing had changed.

The Estonian, currently in the form of her life, dispatched Madison Brengle in the opening match with 6-4, 6-3 to set up the second-round clash with Hontama. Seeded number 11 in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic, she is one of the favourites to deliver a deep run in the competition.

Currently ranked World No. 23, Kontaveit has enjoyed a phenomenal spell on the tour in the last couple of months. At the end of August in Cleveland, she won the WTA 250 title by defeating Irina-Camelia Begu in the final. The following week, she reached the third round in the US Open before heading to Ostrava.

A couple of months before the US Open swing, Kontaveit was also a finalist in the Eastbourne International – another great testimony to her impeccable form this season.

Should she overcome Hontama, she may very well face Bianca Andreescu in the next round.

Hontama, Looking to Make Waves on the WTA Tour

22-year-old Mai Hontama is ranked #200 at the moment, but that may very well change by the end of the season.

She arrived in Chicago on the back of a season spent mainly on the ITF circuit. Her efforts there to build some form and momentum haven’t been entirely in vain – the Japanese reached four finals, going the distance in two of them.

Her last title came in June; since then, Hontama has reached the semis in ITF Spain. She also featured in the US Open and WTA 125 Columbus but well in the qualifiers.

Here in WTA Chicago, she started as a qualifier and defeated Emma Bektas and Harriet Dart in straight sets. In the opening round, she then defeated the former top 10 player Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-0 to kickstart her journey on a sensational note.

Kontaveit v Hontama Prediction & Tip

Kontaveit will start as the favourite here but Hontama has the makings of a player who can deliver some stunning upsets. Expect a good game of tennis.
