The last time she competed in Chicago, Vondrousova reached the third round and she has done so again after two successive straight set victories.

First she trounced Ajla Tomjlanovic of Australia, a woman ranked just three places lower than her in the world rankings for the loss of just three games.

And then she produced an arguably better performance on Wednesday to knock Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, the world number 13, and fourth seed, out of the tournament.

The Czech began strongly securing an early break, and then consolidating her position with another.

The Russian grabbed one of them back, but was immediately broken again and the set belonged to Vondrousova.

A sequence of three dropped service games in the middle of the second set saw the Czech go a break up, and, when it came to Pavlyuchenkova’s turn to serve to stay in the match, she could not cope with the pressure and lost the second match point against her.
