Yastremska Searching for Form

Yastremska heads to Indian Wells with a 4-8 season record. The 21-year-old, who was suspended for the first six months after returning a positive result for a performance-enhancing drug, made a good return once ITF lifted the suspension in June after it concluded that she was not at fault for the positive test result.

The Ukrainian reached the semifinals in Hamburg on her return but has since gone out of form. Usually a solid player on hard courts, Yastremska is 2-7 on the surface this year with her only wins coming over Catherine Mcnally in Cincinnati and Alize Cornet in Chicago last week. Yastremska was dumped out of the Chicago Fall Classic by Elise Mertens in the Round of 32.

A three-time WTA champion from four finals, Yastremska will be hoping for fortunes to change at Indian Wells. This will be her second appearance in the tournament. She was knocked out by Australia’s Daria Gavrilova in the first round on her debut in 2019.

Facing Yastremska will be 18-year-old Elsa Jacquemot, who received a wild card for the event. Ranked no. 374th in the world, Jacquemot is 13-16 from all tournaments this season and will be making her second tour-level main draw appearance on Wednesday.

The French Open girl’s champion in 2020, Jacquemot was knocked out by Elena Rybakina in the first round of the women’s singles at Roland Garros this year.

Her best performances this season came at the ITF level. She reached a maiden ITF final at Perigueux, France and was a semifinalist in Amiens, both clay court tournaments.

She couldn’t qualify for the WTA 125 in Lyon and was knocked out in the first round of WTA 125 in Columbus last week.
