Marta Kostyuk v Shuai Zhang Head to Head
The pair have never played each other once before. This will be the first match , this will be the first meeting between the 19 year old Ukrainian, and her Chinese opponent, 13 years her senior.

Kostyuk’s Debut at Indian Wells
This will be Kostyuk’s debut at Indian Wells. The teenager was still transitioning from junior tennis to the ITF circuit the last time this event was staged.
Winner of both the Australian Open singles and US Open doubles’ title as a junior, she made her Grand Slam debut in 2018 in Melbourne, reaching the third round on that occasion, and that remained her best performance in a major before June, when she got to the fourth round stage of the French Open.
However, in the past few months she has played comparatively little tennis, with her Wimbledon campaign ending at the second round stage.
In the first edition of the Chicago event, she got to the third round, but suffered disappointment at the US Open, beaten in the opening round by Maria Sakkari of Greece.
And, on her return to Chicago last week, she suffered another first round defeat, this time at the hands of compatriot, Kateryna Kozlova, the world number 136, losing in three sets.

Zhang, Winner of the Doubles at the US Open
By contrast, Zhang is making her seventh visit to the California desert, twice making the third round here in 2016 and again two years later.
Last month, with regular partner, Samantha Stosur, she won her second Grand Slam title, adding the US Open women’s doubles title to the one the pair clinched at the Australian Open two years ago.
That doubles’ form has helped make up for her singles’ performances, which has been mixed since she reached the final of the Nottingham Open on grass, losing to Johanna Konta of Great Britain.
She did reach the semi-finals in Palermo and the quarter-finals in Cleveland, but she ran into the unstoppable train that was Emma Radecanu in the second round of the US Open, and has lost her three matches since, beaten by Victoria Azarenka in the first round of Chicago last week.
Kostyuk v Zhang Prediction and Tip
This is a match between age and experience, with the Indian Wells’ debutant taking on the experienced campaigner. Neither woman is in particularly good form just now, but Zhang will start favourite because of her greater knowledge of playing in big tournaments.
