Kwon Soon-woo v Guido Pella Head to Head

Kwon and Pella have been involved in two career head-to-head meetings till date, with the latter holding an emphatic 2-0 lead. Their last meeting came in the last 16 of the Antwerp hard-court tournament. Pella came through in straight sets.

Kwon Beat Dukworth to Lift Astana Title

Rising from the morale crushing first-round loss to big-serving American Reilly Opelka at the US Open, Kwon went on to lift his maiden Tour title in Astana.

Coming into the year’s last Grand Slam with a modest second-round finish at the Winston-Salem Open, Kwon did put up a fight against the big American, especially in the opening set which went to a tiebreak.

However, Opelka pipped the 56th-ranked South Korean in the tiebreak before gradually taking hold of the match with his booming serves and powerful winners.

Setting aside the disappointment of the US Open, the young South Korean lifted his game and got on a sensational run that eventually took him to his first-ever title in the Kazakhstan capital.

The gilded week in Astana saw him go past a clutch of accomplished rivals in the form of James Duckworth in the final and homeboy Alexander Bublik, Laslo Djere and fellow Serbian Dusan Lajovic in previous rounds.

In his first event since Astana, Kwon would be keen to open on a winning note against the Argentine and reaffirm his title credentials early in the tournament but what would give him anxious moments going into the contest is that he lost both his previous head-to-head outings against Pella.

However, he certainly has the form and the run of wins behind him to push for his first win against the Argentine.

Pella Lost to Tiafoe in Round 2 of US Open

Coming into the US Open on the back of a first-round loss to American Jordan Thompson at the Winston-Salem Open, Pella launched his campaign against Filip Krajinovic of Serbia

Fighting from a set down, the Argentine produced scintillating counter-punching tennis to ease past Krajinovic into the second round.

However, Pella couldn’t sustain his levels against home hope Frances Tiafoe as, roared on by a partisan crowd, the American  inflicted a straight-set loss on the Argentine to send him crashing out of the tournament.

Currently ranked 80th in singles, the Argentine does have an opportunity to make amends at the Indian Wells Masters. He will open his campaign against Kwon Soon-woo, a rival he hasn’t lost to in head-to-head meetings till date.

However, what will make it a more even contest this time is that the South Korean is coming off his maiden title lift at the Astana Open and will fancy a score-settling win over the Argentine.

Kwon v Pella Prediction and Tip

While the head-to-head record does tip Pella over Kwon going into this first-round clash, the South Korean will take the confidence from his maiden title win into this contest and will be eyeing revenge.

Tip: Kwon to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
