Andy Murray v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

Murray leads Mannarino 2-0 although, both those wins came six years ago in the US Open and Indian Wells Open. The Brit won the match at the Flushing Meadows in five sets while the one in the latter was completed in straight sets.

Murray Looking to Bounce Back

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray’s path to resurgence post-hip surgery hasn’t gone entirely as per the plan, but what matters here is the fact that he is playing again.

He has taken the year a bit slow for obvious reasons, biding his time and approaching the matches cautiously while listening to his body. The best results he has mustered in 2021 came in the Biella Challengers in February, where he reached the final but lost to Illya Marchenko.

Since then, Murray has featured in a host of ATP tournaments but ended up losing in the early rounds. His best run in that regard came at the Wimbledon – a tournament he has conquered twice – in the form of a third-round appearance. More recently, the 34-year-old participated in the ATP Metz and San Diego Open, losing respectively in the quarterfinal and round two.

With an exceptional pedigree and track record when compared to Mannarino, Murray will fancy his chances of starting strong in the Indian Wells Open. His best performances here entail a runner-up feat in 2009 and a couple of semifinal appearances.

Mannarino Battling Inconsistency

World No. 51 Adrian Mannarino may take solace in the fact that he is ranked 70 odd places above Murray, but by no means is that an indication that he can easily win this match.

The 33-year-old has lost his first-round matches in two of his last three tournaments spanning Wimbledon, US Open, and ATP Sofia. With not a lot of playing time under his belt of late, Mannarino may not be in the best of form.

Looking at the overall season, his key highlights came in ATP Mallorca where he reached as far as the semifinal. Earlier in the season, he had also made it to the third round in the Miami Open, Australian Open, and ATP Singapore. It is also worth mentioning that a good majority of his early-round defeats in 2021 have come at the hands of players ranked well below him.

Murray v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Murray will start this match as the favourite but it may not be a clinical, straight-set affair. Expect some resistance from Mannarino but ultimately, the English wildcard should sail into the second round.
