Jenson Brooksby v Cem Ilkel Head to Head

Brooksby has a surprisingly losing record against Cem Ilkel. They have contested three matches in their head-to-head – all at Challenger level. Two of those happened earlier this year at two Challenger tournaments in South Africa. Ilkel won the first and then Brooksby won the second meeting. While their first-ever meeting came in 2018 in the qualifying rounds of the Tiburon Challenger. The Turk won in three sets.

Brooksby Gets Deserved Wild Card Entry

Jenson Brooksby is among a spate of Americans who have been handed a wild card entrant at this year’s Indain Wells Masters. But Brooksby wouldn’t have needed one anyway given how he has soared the rankings in recent months to sit at a career-high No. 76.

Brooksby is a Californian through and through. He lives in the Californian state of Sacramento, just 500 miles away from Indian Wells. He will make one of his shortest trips of the season to play in the main draw of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

But at 20, Brooksby is no stranger to headline at some of tennis’ prestigious events. At this year’s US Open, he surpassed many onlookers’ expectations when he reached the fourth round.

Brooksby scored wins over the likes of Taylor Fritz and Aslan Karatsev before bowing out to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

Ilkel Scales Qualifying Hurdle

Cem Ilkel advanced into the main draw of Indian Wells after picking two valuable wins in qualifying over Maxime Janvier and Govind Nanda. Both of those wins were registered over three sets. Outside the Grand Slams, this will be his first main draw appearance since Doha, at the start of last season.

Ilkel’s win over Janvier a couple of days ago came under the unlikeliest of circumstances. Having surrendered his one-set lead, he trailed the Frenchman 4-2 in the decider but eventually restored the break back. The third set would go into a tiebreak where Ilkel played catchup once more, recovering from 4-1 down to steal the breaker 7-4.

There was less of that drama in beating the American World No. 520 Nanda on Wednesday. He recovered from a second-set blip to dominated the third set.

Overall, Ilkel will need to improve his second serve significantly to earn cheap points and challenge Jenson Brooksby on Friday.

Brooksby v Ilkel Prediction and Tip

Ilkel weathered a storm in qualifying against opponents ranked distinctly lower in the rankings. Granted the Turk defeated Brooksby earlier this season, the American has looked like a completely different player in recent months.
