Elena Rybakina v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Rybakina Hopes to Have Overcome Chicago Injury

Coming into the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic on the back of a third-round finish at the US Open and a run to the quarter-finals at Ostrava, Rybakina strung a sequence of impressive wins together to reach the semifinal.

Opening her campaign with a comfortable takedown of Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, the current World No.16 followed it up with a labored, straight-set victory over Russian Veronika Kudermetova to reach the quarter-finals.

She progressed to the last-four through a walkover from her quarter-final opponent, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. Though she won via a walkover for the record, Rybakina had a firm grip on the match and would have won comfortably had it run its normal course.

However, in an unfortunate quirk of fate, the tables turned quite spectacularly for the 22-year-old from Kazakhstan in her semifinal outing against Ons Jabeur, as she pulled out with an injury after trailing the Tunisian by a set.

While the disappointment of an injury-enforced end to a promising campaign in Chicago will rankle, Rybakina will be eyeing a fresh start as she opens her campaign at the Indian Wells Masters against fellow countrywoman Yulia Putintseva on Friday.

With their only previous head-to-head clash ending in victory for Putintseva, Rybakina will have added to motivation to push for a win on Friday.

Putintseva Downs Petkovic in Opener

Taking the momentum from a rousing runner-up finish at Astana Open, 43rd-ranked Putintseva opened her Indian Wells campaign with a scrappy win over German Andrea Petkovic.

The opening set was more of a see-saw affair and eventually went to a tiebreak as the two players couldn’t be separated at the end of the regulation 12 games.

However, after edging out the German in the tiebreak, Putintseva found a higher gear in the second set to romp to a fairly comfortable win in the end.

Between the 22-year-old tennis star from Kazakhstan and a place in the third round stands compatriot Elena Rybakina.

On an unbeaten streak from Astana, Putintseva will also have happy memories of her win in her only previous head-to-head outing against Rybakina.

Rybakina v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

While ranked much higher, Rybakina trails Putintseva on the head-to-head score and would be determined to go even this time. However, the latter is on an unbeaten run and will hold a slight edge going into this second-round clash.
