Casper Ruud v Roberto Carballes-Baena Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Ruud has won on every occasion.

Their first meeting was a three setter in Rio in 2017, and then, last year, Ruud thrashed him in Buenos Aires for the loss of a single game. And, three months ago, he beat him in straight sets in the semi-final at Bastad.

San Diego Winner Ruud Hoping to Make a Mark Here

Ruud has had a phenomenal season by anybody’s standards, winning five tournaments on the senior tour, to add to the Argentine Open which he won last year.

The most recent of those cane in San Diego on Sunday, where he thrashed Cameron Norrie in the final, not only cementing his place in the world’s top ten, but also demonstrating that he is evolving into an all-court player.

Whilst all of his previous finals had been on clay, the win in San Diego came on hard courts.

He is now all but certain of appearing in the season-ending ATP finals for the first time, and a decent run in Indian Wells would confirm his lace.

In getting a bye to the second round he has already matched his previous best at a Masters’ event, achieved in Paris last year.

Carballes-Baena More Suited to Clay

Like Ruud, Carballes Baena is happier on clay, the surface on which he won his solitary senior ATP title in 2019 in Ecuador, and achieved success in the doubles in Chile last year.

His best results in 2021 have come on the Challenger tour, where he has been in three finals, winning in Belgrade in April, and finishing twice a runner-up on home soil in Spain, most recently last week.

He has now matched his previous best performance in California by reaching the second round, although the first round draw was kind to him,, pitting him against the Argentine qualifier, Renzo Olivo, the world number 199.

The Spaniard began badly, dropping the opening service game of the match, before hitting back with two breaks of his own. He could not hold on to the advantage though, and promptly dropped his serve again.

Serving to stay in the set though, Olivo presented him with another break opportunity, which he took.

It was Carballes-Baena who achieved the early break in the second set and the Argentine who hit back to level this time. However, the Argentine was under constant threat on his own on his serve, saved several break points, and the pressure eventually told.

Serving to stay in the match, he offered up a match point. Needing no second opportunity, the Spaniard converted it.

Ruud v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Ruud has won all three of their previous matches, is in confident mood after winning in San Diego last week and is developing into an all-court player whilst Carballes-Baena remains happier on clay. It is hard to see beyond a Norwegian win.
