Halep Knocks out Kostyuk

Former champion and 11th seed Simona Halep began her campaign on Friday with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

It was a tough first set with both players breaking each other once in the first 12 games, before Halep raced away with the tiebreak.

With the first set in the bag, the Romanian dominated the second, breaking Kostyuk twice to wrap up the contest in an hour and 33 minutes.

Halep was very dominant in the second set, winning 11 of 19 return points and 19 of 29 service points.

This is the Romanian’s first tournament since falling to Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open. In what has been a stop-start season for the World No. 17, Halep improved the season record to 16-7 following the second round win. The 22-time tour level champion’s best performance was a semifinal finish in Stuttgart. She also reached two other quarterfinals but hasn’t tasted much success this year.

Can she deliver at Indian Wells? She won the title here in 2015 and was a semifinalist in 2018. She was however beaten in the Round of 16 in the last edition in 2019.

Converting 5 of 11 break points and saving 3 of 5, Sasnovich breezed past the Briton 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes.

The win ended Raducanu’s 10-match unbeaten streak, all of which were won in a stunning qualifier to title run at Flushing Meadows.

Ranked No. 100 in the world, Sansovich was equally dominant in her first round match as she thrashed Colombia’s María Camila Osorio Serrano 6-0, 6-4. Friday’s win improved the 27-year-old’s season record to 23-19.

A former No. 30, the Belarusian has reached two quarterfinals this year in Belgrade and Cleveland. This is the second time she has made it to the third round at Indian Wells, having also reached this far in 2018.
