Taylor Fritz v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the first round of Wimbledon this year, Fritz winning in four sets.

Fritz in Patchy Form

Back in 2018 Fritz reached the fourth round in Indian Wells, his first round of 16 appearance in a Masters series event. It is a measure of how his career has stalled since then that it remained his best performance to date at this level until earlier this year when he emulated that achievement in Miami.

The fact that he was given a bye in the first round saved him from the fate that awaited him in the last two hard court Masters events, beaten in the first round in Toronto and Cincinnati.

.His form has been patchy since reaching the semi-finals in Atlanta, where he eventually lost to Jannik Sinner, winning only two matches since.

He did achieve a good victory over Alex de Minaur in his home Grand Slam, but then lost to compatriot Jenson Brooksby,

And, last week in San Diego, he also was beaten in the second time, this time by the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, losing in straight sets.

Nakashima Cruises Past Argentine

This is the first time that Nakashima has featured in the main draw at Indian Wells, but having never won a Masters series match before, he made a good start to his campaign by  beating the Argentina clay court specialist Federico Coria, the world number 67, in the first round on Friday night.

Nakashima was in control from the start, secure in his serve, whilst always ready to put pressure on that of Coria. And he achieved a breakthrough midway through the first set with a break, which he then consolidated to move ahead in the match.

And the pattern continued in the second set, another break putting Nakashima in complete control. Coria, who could barely lay a glove on him, was broken again, and the 20-year old sealed the win with his first match point.

Twice a finalist on the American hard court swing this year, a good run in California would be a good way for him to end the season off.

Fritz v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

This promises to be a close encounter between the two Americans with little to separate them on paper. However, Fritz did win their only previous match earlier this year, and that may just give him the psychological advantage.
