Bianca Andreescu v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Kontaveit leads Andreescu 2-0, last defeating the young Canadian in the 2021 WTA Eastbourne International with 6-3, 6-3.

A Shaky Start for Andreescu

Defending champion Bianca Andreescu started her title defence at the BNP Paribas Open on a rather shaky note against Alison Riske. Starting with a bye into the second round, the number 16 seed needed a little under three hours to seal the win with 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2. That said, Andreescu had a decent service game, winning 73% of her first service points.

Andreescu’s recent form hasn’t been that great and as a result, she dropped out of the top 10 to the #21 position. She had a much better time at the start of the season, having reached the semifinal at the Phillip Island Trophy and the final at the Miami Open.

The 21-year-old hardly picked up any wins through clay and grass, and it wasn’t until the US Open swing that we saw a slight revival in her form. Andreesuc made it to the third round at the Canadian Open and fourth round at the Flushing Meadows, before losing her opening match at the WTA 500 Chicago.

Andreescu is rusty, to say the least, and will need to up her game substantially when she takes on the in-form Kontaveit.

Kontaveit Starts Well

Anett Kontaveit hardly faced any major difficulties in her opening-round bout against the Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan. The 18th seeded player was on course to win the match with 6-3, 5-2 when Trevisan retired from the match.

The 25-year-old Estonian (currently ranked World No. 20) has had a pretty impressive spell in 2021. She arrived in Indian Wells with a win-loss tally of 32-14 and two singles titles. Her first title came at the Cleveland Open while the second one came in WTA 500 Ostrava, where she beat Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova, and Maria Sakkari en route to the trophy.

The following week, Kontaveit was also slated to play in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. There she withdrew in round two, possibly to rest and prepare for the showdown in the desert.

The last time she featured in the competition, she made it as far as the fourth round. Seeing Andreescu’s shaky form, that may very well be the case this time too.

Kontaveit v Andreescu Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit has experience and form on her side. Meanwhile, Andreescu, as we said, appears to be a bit rusty and faces her toughest test yet in the competition.

This has the makings of being a three-setter but if we’re to pick a winner, Kontaveit makes for the more appealing bet.
