World No. 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich entered the BNP Paribas Open with a record of 21-19 and a largely underwhelming season. Following the stellar week in the valley, the 27-year-old has assured herself of a spot in the top 100, a good chunk of prize money, and substantial ranking points.
Up until now, her best run of the season was in Wimbledon where she reached the third round after moving past Serena Williams in the opener (it wasn’t a win as much as the American retiring in the first set).
But here in Indian Wells, Sasnovich has delivered a litany of impressive victories with a sharp determination to go further up. In the first round, she defeated María Camila Osorio Serrano 6-0, 6-4, and followed it with another straight-set win over the US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
In the next round, she met the former World No. 1 Simona Halep and beat her 7-5, 6-4, to quell any doubts whether her recent form was a fluke. Now, Sasnovich faces another former number one player.

Azarenka, Rediscovering her Form
World No. 32 Victoria Azarenka has had a good run in the Indian Wells Open so far. A champion here in 2009, she started her campaign this time around with a bye into the second round.
In the opener, she moved past Magda Linette with 7-5, 3-0 on account of the Pole retiring from the match. In round three, she met Petra Kvitova and defeated her 7-5, 6-4, to keep her prospects alive in the competition.
In what can only be described as a muted season by Azarenka – also evident from the fact that she fell out of the top 15 – the 32-year-old will now hope to make up for it and finally bring home a trophy. Her last title on the tour came in the 2020 Cincinnati Open.
But that isn’t to say that Azarenka hasn’t had her moments in 2021. She reached the third round in her last four tournaments on the tour and was also a semifinalist in the Bett1Open and WTA Qatar.

Sasnovich is in the form of the season right now and as seen often in the past, whenever underdogs get on a roll, it becomes difficult to stop them.
Azarenka has the experience and a superior pedigree on her side that should see her through to the next round. All in all, we are in for a cracker of a match.
