Andy Murray v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before  Murray won at the Cincinnati Masters last year, but Tiafoe avenged that defeat at the Winston-Salem Open two months ago.

2019 Winner Murray Hoping to Continue Form

Two years ago, Murray won the title here in Antwerp, a victory that marked his comeback on the ATP tour after the hip surgery that, at one stage, looked like it would end his career.

However, since then, he has continued to struggle with a series of injury problems, and now has to rely on wildcards to events where, in the past, he would have been among the top seeds.

At some point, he will need to decide about his future – whether he has a realistic chance of getting back to the top level again, or whether he is just prepared for the relentless slog of the ATP tour.

For the time being though, he is content to take each tournament on its own merits, and see what progress he can make.

He was last in action in Indian Wells, where he performed creditably in getting to the third round beating Adrian Mannarino and then the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz. He then lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets in what was something of a grudge match – Murray has been critical off the court for the German’s alleged involvement in domestic – but he pushed the world number four close.

Tiafoe Looking to End 2021 on a High

Tiafoe first on to the scene in 2018 by winning the Delray Beach Open and finishing runner-up in Estoril a few months later,

At that stage he was viewed as the next best hope for American tennis, but there has been a sense that he has failed to fully realise his potential since then.

However, he did win the Challenger title on the grass of Nottingham in June, and there have been signs of better things to come for the 23-year old, after reaching the fourth round of the US Open, beating Andrey Rublev in the process,

Last week in Indian Wells, he beat first Benoît Paire of France, and then compatriot Sebastian Korda, before going down to a straight sets defeat to Hubert Hurkasz.

He will be looking to end the year on ahigh so that he can go into the winter in a positive mood, ahead of next season.

Murray v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

This will likely be a closely fought match, but Tiafoe is the younger man, and has won their most recent encounter, Murray, meanwhile, always has the nagging doubt in his mind that his body will not stand up to the rigours of the tour.
