Alize Cornet v Wang Xinyu Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the Australian Open in 2018, Cornet winning in straight sets.

Chicago Finalist Cornet

Cornet who has won eight senior WTA titles, reached her first final in two years in Chicago, losing eventually to Elina Svitolina.

That was very much a highlight of what has been a mixed year for the Frenchwoman, although she did make the semi-finals in Berlin on grass in June.

However, she did make a confident start to her campaign in Tenerife, with a dominant victory over the Swiss qualifier, Stefanie Voegele, the world number 115.

Cornet began badly, losing her serve in the opening game of the match, but hit back with three successive breaks of her own, wrapping up the firsts et in 37 minutes.

The second set lasted exactly the same time, and followed almost exactly the same pattern as the first. Cornet dropped her serve early, but then hit back with three breaks of her own. Voegele held serve once in the entire match.

Chinese Qualifier Wang Eases Past Compatriot

Better known to date on the Challenger tour, where she lost in the final of a tournament in Columbus, Ohio last month, although she did win the doubles at the same event. Wang came through the qualifying tournament in Tenerife to take her place in the main draw.

And, as fate would have it, she played compatriot Shuai Zhang, the world number 55, a woman 12 years older than her.

Zhang started the match terribly, dropping her first three services games and, although she was able to recover one of them, Wang was still able to claim the first set with ease.

It did not get much better for the more experienced player in the second set either. After the first two games were shared, Zhang did not win another in the course of a match.

What had looked a tough match on paper for Wang had turned into a routine day’s work.

Cornet v Wang Prediction and Tip

As the higher ranked, and more experienced player, Cornet will start this match as the favourite to make the third round.
