Hercog Looks To Gategrash Party
Polona Hercog may not need to read the script. That is because she stands a better chance of upsetting the newly-crowned US Open champion who is still feeling like a child in a sweet shop.
In as much as Hercog could emulate Sasnovich’s exploits, there is a reason why the Slovenian will fall short in her bid to inflict a second successive defeat on the British No. 1.
The 30-year-old is ranked outside the world’s top 100, and her ranking has been insufficient to warrant automatic main draw spots on most women’s tour-level tournaments.
Hercog has picked up one main draw win at tour level since the clay-court season ended. In fact, she has only tallied four wins all season, her lowest return in a single year since 2017. She can still turn her fortunes around, but with just one more week of regular action, the Slovenian could have her work cut out.
She has had more joy on the ITF circuit where she won the Oeiras title after her opponent Clara Burel pulled out from the final due to injury.
