Marta Kostyuk sits at a career-high ranking of No. 53 ahead of her first appearance in Cluj-Napoca. Kostyuk’s progress from her embryonic tennis years has taken much longer than anticipated, but her efforts are paying off.
The 19-year-old has tallied 17 wins in 2021 – the most that she has managed to put up in a single season.
Kostyuk has made two semifinals at WTA tournaments and recently made the quarterfinals of Chicago in the North American hard courts. But her major breakthrough came at this year’s French Open when she reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
That accomplishment came on the back of a stunning first-round win over Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard was out of the Top 10 at the time, meaning it was Kostyuk’s first Top 20 win on the WTA.
Kostyuk has been actively playing doubles tennis this year. Last week she made the finals in Tenerife alongside countrywoman Lyudmyla Kichenok, but lost in straight sets.

Tough Year For American Lefty
Bernarda Pera began the year entrenched inside the world’s Top 100. But now that the rankings freeze has been lifted, most of her ranking points from 2019 have come off.
That year Pera had a resurgent season that included back-to-back semifinal finishes in Lausanne and Jurmala. She won 16 matches from a possible 33 – a return good enough to see her finish 65th in the year-end rankings.
But things have since gone downhill for the American lefthander. A pandemic-hit 2020 did not bring the best out of Pera who failed to win back-to-back matches throughout a truncated season. And she has carried that pattern in the current year where she has been accustomed to playing many qualifying matches.
Currently, she sits on the fence of the Top 100. The 26-year-old would have probably needed to navigate a similar route to reach the main draw in Cluj-Napoca, but following a spate of withdrawals on the eve of the tournament, her ranking has finally made the cut.
Kostyuk v Pera Prediction and Tip
Kostyuk has a real chance of breaking the world’s top 50 for the first time, and the onus is certainly on the Ukrainian to live up to the billing. We expect her to account for an inconsistent opponent.
