Matteo Berrettini v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, at the US Open in 2019, Berrettini winning in four sets in his run to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows that year.

Berrettini Among Tournament Favourites

Berrettini starts the week among the tournament favourites after another fine year on tour.

He has won two tournaments, the Serbia Open, and Queen’s the biggest win of his career. He has also appeared in his first Grand Slam final, losing to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and made the fourth round in Melbourne and the quarter-finals in both Paris and New York.

And add to that losing in the final of the Madrid Masters, then he can feel satisfied with his season’s work, but there is still time for it to get better, with this event and the Paris Masters to come, followed by the ATP Finals in Turin where he has already qualified.

Another deep run in Vienna would be ideal preparation for the challenges to come.

Popyrin Made to Qualify in Vienna

Popyrin began his season well, winning his first senior ATP title in Singapore in February, defeating Alexander Bublik in the final.

There isa  sense though that he has failed to build on that success, although he did reach the third round of the US Open, his best showing to date at a Grand Slam. In the course of that run, he beat Grigor Dimitrov, his third win over a top twenty player in 2021.

After New York he took a break before Indian Wells where he got to the second round before losing to Hubert Hurkasz.

He was beaten in the first round in Antwerp last week though, and made to qualify for  this event.

He beat the veteran Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in straight sets, although that match featured an 18-pointy tie-break, and then battled past Norbert Gombos of Slovakia, beating he world number 108 in three closely contested sets.

Berrettini v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Berrettini is looking to find top form ahead of the remaining events of the season, and will not want to let himself be upset by a man he beat in their one previous meeting.
