Andrey Rublev v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

Rublev leads Fritz 2-1, last defeating his adversary in the ATP Dubai 2021 in straight sets.

Fritz Overcomes Sonego

World No. 26 Taylor Fritz needed an hour and 50 minutes to mark his Paris Masters’ opening win over Lorenzo Sonego with 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The 24-year-old had a good match with 79 per cent first-serve point wins and just 16 unforced errors. He also converted three out of five break points while two of the three in the process.

Fritz will now turn his attention to Rublev – a formidable opponent – and in all fairness, he will fancy his chances this time around.

The American arrived in Paris on the back of a runner-up feat in the St. Petersburg Open where he fell to Marin Cilic in the final. It was his first ATP final appearance since February last season and was preceded by a semifinal feat in the Indian Wells Masters where he upset Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, and Alexander Zverev.

Frtiz’s other exploits on hard courts include final four feat in Doha, fourth-round stint in Miami, and back to back semifinal runs in Los Cabos and Atlanta. So clearly, if there was ever a time for him to beat another top 10 player this season, this would be it.

Rublev Starts with a Bye

Andrey Rublev, seeded fifth for the tournament in Paris, is starting with a bye into the second round. The current World No. 6 has had a phenomenal year with a win-loss tally of 48-19.

He was a runner-up here in 2019 and this time around will look to go the distance. So far in 2021, he has won the Rotterdam Open and followed it with finalist feats in the Monte Carlo Masters, Halle Open, and Cincinnati Masters.

In more recent competitions, Rublev reached the quarterfinal in St. Petersburg and the semis in ATP San Diego. The 24-year-old is clearly in the form of his life and has been absolutely smashing in all regards. Not much can be criticised of Rublev’s form this season – all that remains is for him to carry this fine run forward here in Paris.

Rublev v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Rublev will start as the heavy favourite but given Fritz’s recent form and momentum, an upset is certainly on the cards. We are in for a good game of tennis where the Russian ought to win in three sets.
