Muguruza Snaps Kontaveit’s Streak

Garbine Muguruza ended Anett Kontaveit’s 12-match win streak in the last match of the group phase to finish second in Group Teotihuacán and end Karolina Pliskova’s chances of progressing.

After Pliskova defeated Barbora Krejcikova, the World no. 5 Muguruza needed to win her match to qualify and the Spaniard did just that, defeating the Estonian 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 27 minutes.

Muguruza served seven aces, saved all three break points that she faced and broke Kontaveit once in each set to end the latter’s streak which began in Moscow.

The sixth seed had begun the tournament with a three-set loss to Pliskova, going down to the Czech player 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). However, she got her first win of the tournament in the next match, overcoming a one-set deficit to defeat Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The 28-year-old, who is playing in the WTA Finals for the fourth time, is into the semis of the year-ending tournament for the second time. She achieved the feat in 2015, when she won all her group matches but lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinal.

Having won two titles this year, in Dubai and Chicago, she will be hoping to cap off the year with another, which will take her total tally to 10 titles. She is two wins away from that milestone though and faces a tough semifinal against the in-form compatriot.

Badosa’s Winning Run Ends

Paula Badosa had already booked her spot in the semifinals after two dominant wins in the tournament, but she couldn’t keep the perfect record intact as she went down to Iga Swiatek in her final match of the Chichén-Itzá Group.

Badosa, who had beaten Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-0 and Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, fell to Swiatek 5-7, 4-6 in a one-hour-and-39-minute contest.

The Spaniard got a break in each set against the Polish player, but it was  Swiatek, who broke her opponent twice in both the sets to win the contest and end Badosa’s eight match win streak. The series of wins began at the Indian Wells Open where she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final to claim her first-ever WTA 1000 title.

The 24-year-old began the season as World No. 70, but has risen to No. 10, thanks to her first two WTA titles. She will now be aiming to end the year on a high.

Muguruza v Badosa Prediction and Tip

This promises to be an entertaining semifinal between the two Spaniards and it may need a third set to decide the winner. While Badosa is in top form, she may find it difficult to beat the experienced Muguruza. Expect the latter to edge past Badosa in three.
