Bojana Jovanovski Announces Retirement

Bojana Jovanovski Retires from Tennis

Bojana Jovanovski, a former world number 32, has decided to hang up her racquet. The 26-year-old’s decision follows her injury problems that have plagued her regularly in the recent past making it difficult for her to return to full fitness.

In a message on her Facebook page, Jovanovski said:

“The first chapter of my professional life has come to end. My career as a professional player is completed. After a lot of thinking and numerous injuries and operations, it was very hard for me to make a final decision. I am still very passionate about tennis and competing but my body can not follow.

“Since I can no longer train and play the way I used to, give my best and fulfill all professional goals I had no other option.”

The Serbian won two WTA titles in her career, along with one WTA $125k win and four other ITF title victories. In 2014, she was ranked 32nd on the WTA charts, her highest ever having made it to round three at Wimbledon that year – her best ever performance in that tournament.

Jovanovski’s best Grand Slam performance, however, came in the 2013 Australian Open where she reached the fourth round before she lost in three tough sets to Sloane Stephens. Her WTA title victories came in the Baku Cup in 2012 and the Tashkent Open the following year.

She was also a part of the Serbian team that finished runner-up to Czech Republic in the 2012 Fed Cup.

The Serb struggled with her wrist and right shoulder injuries, and as a result of that, she featured in just five matches in the 2016 season. She lost all those encounters. Having tried to overcome her problems without using surgery as an option she opted to go for an operation in the second half of 2016 but the recovery took more than a year.

Her widely anticipated return came in 2018 after more than two years of absence but she failed to get past the first qualifying round at the St. Petersburg Open. Later she featured in ITF matches before calling it quits.

Jovanovski has now said she will continue to be associated with sport, and tennis in particular. She said she would now look to graduate in psychology and get into tennis coaching in the future.
