Steve Johnson v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

The pair played each other once before, in the opening round of the Shanghai Masters in 2018, Khachanov coming from behind to win in three sets.

Johnson Made to Work Hard By Wildcard

The experienced Johnson was given, at least on paper, a relatively easy opening match draw against the local wildcard, Aleksandar Vukic.

However, he was made to work a lot harder than he might have expected or wanted by the world number 156.

The first set was dominated by serve, and there were few winning returns made by either man, although Vukic was the first to have to save break points. In his next service game, he offered another, and this time Johnson converted it of the set.

In the second set, though, it was the American who proved the more fallible. He dropped his serve once, and then, having failed to convert two break back points, was broken again, enabling Vukic to take the match into a third set.

Again, it became a service battle, although Johnson was the first to have to save a break point against him. Two more break point opportunities came and went for Vukic, and the Australian was made to regret his generosity when he offered up a match point which Johnson ruthlessly converted.

Khachanov Looking to Regain Lost Ground

In 2018 Khachanov won four ATP titles, including the prestigious Paris Masters, and, by the middle of the following year, he was ranked eighth in the world.

However, he has struggled to maintain that level of performance since, and not only has he seen Daniil Medvedev overtake him to become Russia’s number one, but he closed 2021 behind Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev as well.

Although 2021 was generally a fallow year for Khachanov, the Tokyo Olympics did provide a bright spot, and he reached the final, although he had to settle for a silver medal in the end after losing to Alexander Zverev.

Now he will be hoping to regain some of the ground he has lost in the past two years, and, having been given a first-round bye, will want to start well in Adelaide.

Johnson v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Khachanov will be looking to start the season well, and he will start favourite against a man whose tournament came close to being ended early by a local wildcard.
