Murray Eyes Title Run

Three-time major champion and former world number one Andy Murray ended 2021 with some impressive wins and making the final eight at both Metz and Stockholm, after making the round of 32 at Wimbledon.

The Briton has been on a comeback trail since his hip surgery a couple of seasons ago and despite many setbacks has continued to attempt to get back to the levels he was once at. The Scot has received a wild card for the first Grand Slam of the year, and will be competing in the Melbourne major for the first time since 2019.

A five-time Australian Open finalist, Murray fell 3-6, 7-5, 3-6 to clay-court specialist Facundo Bagnis in the first round at the Melbourne ATP 250 last week.

Murray started in better form this week against qualifier Viktor Durasovic of Norway in the opener here in Sydney, dropping only four games on his way to the next round.  The two-time Wimbledon champion was up against the gritty Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili next up and in a match that lasted three hours prevailed in a decider after splitting the first two sets in tiebreaks.

Playing Belgian David Goffin against whom he has a strong record, Murray started strongly taking the first set 6-2, before Goffin retired with injury, ensuring that Murray gets a spot in the semi-final and maybe more left in the tank than if he had to play a full match.

Opelka Relying On Giant Serve

Reilly Opelka came into the season with a mixed 2021, where unlike the previous two years he did not win a title, but made the biggest final of his career at the Toronto Masters 1000, where he was runner-up to Daniil Medvedev. En route he was victorious against the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Roberto Bautista Agut and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Opelka won just two matches from his last four ATP tournaments in 2021 and was hoping to start the new season on a more positive note.

However, he lost a tight opener last week at Melbourne to compatriot and eventual finalist Maxime Cressy 11-9 in the final set tiebreak.

Opelka has looked more assured this week and his big serving has seen him make the semi-finals without dropping a set in two positive performances against Jordy Thompson and Brandon Nakashima respectively.

Murray v Opelka Prediction and Tip

It has been a good week for Murray and a title run will be the most ideal start to the season. However, Opelka has looked good and his giant serve will not be easy to navigate.

Expect a good contest on the cards, but the big server can be expected to prevail in three sets.
