Leylah-Annie Fernandez v Madison Inglis Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before on the ITF circuit, both matches taking place in 2019. Fernandez won in Canberra and again in Granby, Canada.

US Open Finalist Fernandez Hoping to Continue in Same Vein

Still only 19, Fernandez seems destined for the very top after winning her maiden WTA title in Monterrey in March.

However, it was her exploits at the US Open that brought her to consciousness of many, with a stunning run to the final that included victories over Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and the world number two Arnya Sabalenka.

She suffered intense disappointment when she was then beaten by another teenager, Emma Radecanu, but many observers feel that it is only a matter of time before the Canadian also wins a Grand Slam.

However, she will need to improve on her Australian Open record, having been beaten in the opening round on her previous two visits.

She too began her 2022 campaign in Adelaide, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the first round. However, she them lost to the Polish world number 8, Iga Świątek, beaten in straight sets.

Local Wildcard Inglis Would Like to Push Opponent

Inglis is back in the main draw of her home Grand Slam after being given a wildcard for the second successive years, and for the third time in all.

However, she has yet to win a match at the tournament.

The Australian spends the vast majority of her time on the ITF circuit, where she has won six titles, all of them on hard courts, most recently in Perth in February 2020.

In Adelaide in the first week of the season she came through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw, only to lose to the American Shelby Rogers in straight sets.

The following week she was the recipient of yet another wild card and benefitted by beating the lucky loser, Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in their opening round match. She was then outclassed by Tamara Zidansek, claiming just three games off the Slovenian.

Fernandez v Inglis Prediction and Tip

Neither woman has ever won a match before in the main draw of the Australian Open, but Fernandez will start the overwhelming favourite to break her duck in Melbourne.
