Azarenka Looks To Continue Resurgence

Victoria Azarenka will look to continue her fine career resurgence in the past 18 months, which has seen her headline a Grand Slam final as well as adding to her trophy cabinet with Cincinnati title in that time.

Last year Azarenka fought off a series of injuries, five of which were well documented and forced her to retire at five different tournamnets. And outisde the French Open, she did not make the second week at the other three Slams.

But those difficulties and hard luck did not tari=nish what was an otherwise decent season, that included a WTA 1000 runner-up finish at Indian Wells. Azarenka and Paula Badosa played out arguably the match of the year at the Californian desert.

The Belarusian star arrives in Melbourne on the back of a quarterfinal exit at the Adelaide International. Azarenka is a two-time champion at the Australian Open, but she has suffered first-round defeats at each of her previous participations at the year’s first Major.

Udvardy Seeks To Upstage Former Champion

Panna Udvardy will be playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. Her top-100 ranking status means that she has now attained automatic entry at one of tennis’ prestigious tournaments.

Udvardy had lost in the qualifying rounds in two previous tries – the second round of Wimbledon qualifiers being the closest she had come to reach the main draw.

But she had a sensational year on the ITF tour where she has featured heavily throughout her career. She won a staggering 57 matches from 74, and bagged five titles in the process. Her ranking naturally shot up, from outside the top 350 at the start of the year to achieve a year-end ranking of No. 115.

The 23-year-old favors the clay courts and has played at her home tournament in Budapest multiple times –  the only taste of tour-level tennis she has garnered in her career. Can she translate her clay success to hard courts?

Azarenka v Udvardy Prediction and Tip

Azarenka is odds-on to reach the second round and it is hard to see Udvardy stopping her. The Belarusian should make light work of the ITF clay-court specialist.
