Taylor Fritz v Maximilian Marterer Head to Head

Marterer beat Fritz in their only meeting in Miami in 2019.

Fritz is 2-1 in 2022

World No. 22 Taylor Fritz brings a 2-1 2022 record to the Australian Open. Competing at the ATP Cup, the 24-year-old fought back from a set down to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime and held off a comeback bid from Cameron Norrie to win in three. His only loss came against Alexander Zverev, with the German winning in straight sets.

Fritz, who has never gone past the third round at a major, will be competing at the Australian Open for the sixth time. Over the last three years, the American won the first two matches at the Australian Open each year, but couldn’t make it to the fourth round.

Fritz is coming off a decent 2021 season, going 34-22. He delivered his best performance at St. Petersburg, where he finished the runner-up. Besides that performance, he also reached semifinals on five occasions, including at Indian Wells, Doha, Cagliari, Los Cabos and Atlanta.

Having started the season well, Fritz will be hoping to put up a good show at Melbourne.

Marterer Comes Through Qualifiers

World No. 228 Maximilian Marterer of Germany entered the main draw with a solid showing in the qualifying rounds.

The 26-year-old left-hander, who had a fantastic 2018 season, which saw him reach a career-high ranking of No. 45, has struggled over the last couple of years after being hampered by a left foot injury.

Marterer will be making his third main draw appearance at the Australian Open. He reached the third round on debut in 2018 and the Round of 64 ion 2019.

His journey to the main draw this year included a come-from-behind win over Croatia’s Nino Serdarušić in the first qualifying round, and straight sets wins over India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran and compatriot Tobias Kamke in the second and third qualifying rounds respectively.

Can he make an impact on his return to the main draw after failing to go past the qualifiers over the last two years?

Fritz v Marterer Prediction and Tip

Fritz will look to get his revenge over the German. He is the higher-ranked player and has been in great touch over the last one year. Expect the American to win and advance for a second-round match with the winner of the Frances Tiafoe-Marco Trungelliti match.
