Garbine Muguruza v Alize Cornet Head to Head
The two players have quite a bit of rivalry going on between them. It is currently tied at 2-2 with Cornet winning their last two encounters. Their most recent match was on the grass courts of Berlin last season where the unseeded Cornet won the game in three sets.

2020 Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza kickstarted her campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Clara Burel in the opener. The Spaniard needed just an hour and 30 minutes to seal the second-round berth; she also enjoyed a decent service game by winning 71% of the points on the first go.
Muguruza made it to the top five once again last season after a breakthrough spell on the tour. She made it to five singles finals – going the distance in three of them. Her biggest accomplishments include the WTA 1000 title in Dubai and the season-end championships at the WTA Finals.
The 28-year-old also had a decent start to 2022 – she reached the quarterfinal in Sydney before losing to Daria Kasatkina.
Seeded number three for the Melbourne Slam, Muguruza is certainly in fine form. She is placed in a tricky bracket with a potential match against Simona Halep awaiting her in the fourth round. Nonetheless, given her recent streaks on the tour and overall career, she is well-positioned to go the distance.

Another Second Round Stint for Cornet
Alize Cornet defeated Viktoriya Tomova in her Melbourne opener with 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round, for the third consecutive time. One more win and she would look to do something that she hasn’t done here since 2009 – reach the round of 16.
Her prospects, however, do look bleak. Her first service against Tomova wasn’t that phenomenal as she picked up just 56% of the points there. Plus, the current World No. 61 also went winless for the first two tournaments this year before finally bagging a victory in the Slam.
On the whole, Cornet has never been among the players who reach latter rounds consistently. Last year, her highlights include a runner-up feat in WTA 250 Chicago and a couple of penultimate round stints in Tenerife, Luxembourg, and Berlin.
Muguruza v Cornet Prediction and Tip
Muguruza will start as the heavy favourite, given her present form and momentum. Cornet, on her part, will face a tough match and possibly push this to three sets. After all, the 31-year-old is well-versed with the game herself and has a good history against her adversary.
