Serena Williams will return to the Mubadala World Tennis Championship that will be played in December and will face sister Venus in a match in that exhibition tournament.
She had featured in the tournament last year in a bid to make a comeback to the circuit following the birth of her daughter and she played former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in a one-off match. This year, she will take on Venus Williams in what will be a one-off encounter.
Venus is herself a seven-time Grand Slam champion and while she hasn’t won a major since the 2008 Wimbledon, she has been very competitive on the women’s circuit. Incidentally, the two sisters have also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together.
In a press release, Serena said she had enjoyed playing in Abu Dhabi last season and would love to return to the city yet again.
She added:
“This time, I’ll be playing against my sister, so the match will be even more special.”
It was a roller-coaster year for Serena in 2018, having returned from the birth of her child to feature at three of the Grand Slams. While she didn’t go too far at the French Open, Serena made it to the final at Wimbledon and US Open, but lost both matches. The second of these matches at the US Open final ended in an acrimonious controversy.
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship will be played over December 27-29 and will be hosted by the Zayed Sports City’s International Tennis Centre where six of the top men’s players including Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will also be in action.
Djokovic and Nadal might also clash in the final if both of them win their respective semi-final.
The other players who will take part in this competition include Dominic Thiem, Hyeon Chung, Karen Khachanov and Kevin Anderson.
